Calm Seasonal Stress by Conducting Holiday Appliance Checks

The end of the year is quickly approaching, which means that the holidays are just around the corner. With the holidays come festivities, joy, and traditions like roasting the perfect Thanksgiving turkey, baking delicious gingerbread cookies, decorating a tree with twinkling lights, flipping the thermostat from cold to heat for the first time, and even enjoying a few extra minutes warming up in a hot shower on a frosty morning.

What is hopefully never a tradition is when a household appliance doesn’t do its job properly. In a survey of more than 381,000 appliances, Consumer Reports calculated that 6 percent of respondents reported problems with ovens or stove tops not lighting or heating up correctly, while 5 percent of people reported refrigerators that didn’t keep their food as cool as they should. An even larger 11 percent of people said that their dishwashers no longer did their job properly.

Don’t let a kitchen dilemma ruin your festivities. Add these three holiday appliance checks to your schedule and have a smooth, stress-free holiday season.

Deep Clean Your Appliances

If you are planning on cooking up a big holiday meal for your family, you are likely already planning on tidying the counters and sweeping the floor. But don’t ignore your appliances. The best way to prevent issues with their functionality is by giving them some detailed cleaning attention.

Start by pulling the fridge away from the wall and cleaning out the dust from the mechanical coils . Then, move on to the oven or stove, checking that all the heating elements and gas burners heat and ignite properly. If possible, take out each burner and clean it individually . Don’t forget about your dishwasher—if your dishes are coming out dirty, you can clean it by setting a single dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top rack and running a full cycle. Simply following these few holiday appliance checks will help ensure you have a stress-free holiday season.

Test Run Your Appliances

Whether you use your kitchen every day or enjoy a fair amount of takeout, it is a good idea to test out your kitchen appliances before the pressure of preparing a big holiday dinner is on. A week prior to your big cooking day, turn on all the appliances you are planning on using and bake some cookies or a casserole. Then load up your dishwasher with all the dishes to make sure everything comes out clean. This way, if you have any problems, you are prepared in advance and can get in contact with maintenance to have your appliances fixed and ready to go for when you need them.
